Tony, Tony, Tony!!

There’s a peculiar sort of satisfaction that happens when you recognize a talent that is then recognized by the world. And we at the studio are just glowing with satisfaction these days. You see, recently the Tony nominations were announced, and when we heard that Bobby Steggert was nominated for his raw and moving ‘Younger Brother’ in Ragtime, Robin de Jesus for his warm and hilarious Jacob in La Cage Aux Folles, and the rockin’ and awesome American Idiot for Best Musical, we couldn’t help but have a little bit of the ‘I told you sos’ – for with each of these guys/shows, we had the thrill of sitting in an audience and watching that peculiar alchemy that happens when an actor disappears so entirely into a role we feel like we are living through them. It’s a rare thing, but such a special one that you want to turn to the people next to you just to confirm that it’s not all in your head. Well,  the Tony nominators have voted, and it’s pretty clear it isn’t all in our heads. And though we’ll admit we’re a little peeved that the excellent Tom Kitt was overlooked for his brilliant American Idiot orchestrations, and John Gallagher Jr. was overlooked for providing a searing heart to the show, but we comfort ourselves with the thought that Tom Kitt probably would have to have a shelf specially built to hold all his awards without breaking through the floor (maybe Hal Prince can recommend a builder), and that John Gallagher Jr. has been so consistently brilliant since he blazed on the scene that he too will be able to make a little fort out of his Tonys someday, we are thrilled. We here at the studios send a hearty congratulations to the nominees for the 2010 Tony Awards – we’ll be sending much love and good thoughts your way on the big night.
